Our newest kit, Vintage Snowballs, combines Vintage Noel & Sugar Rush from Blend Fabrics in a snowball block design. A snowball block is one of the easiest blocks you’ll ever make. Not only is it simple, it’s a fabulous block to show off medium to large scale prints. It’s perfect for these fabrics!
You can easily see the Vintage Ornaments, Snow Globes & perfectly cute Gingerbread Houses!
To add some interest I wanted to separate the snowball blocks with a sashing and candy stripe cornerstones.
Then I carried that stripe out to the binding to tie everything together.
Let’s not forget about the backing…it deserves just as much attention to detail. When I have time, I like to use most of my scraps up on the backing. Just randomly pieced and flying by the seat of my pants is usually the way I roll with my backs. I think this one turned out great!
I didn’t stop there though. You know I love Christmas fabric!! So I made up a couple of cute Allie dogs too. This is a pattern by Bunny Hill that’s in the shop. So stinkin’ cute and simple. Ive made these in the past as package toppers for your favorite puppy lover, or ornaments hung from the tree.
I made one when Daisy came to live with us. Her puppy nestles every year in my Christmas tree. Puppy’s first ornament. Too add the extra touch of cuteness, head over to Petsmart and have a few dog tags made to adorn their necks.

There’s a new chill in the air and as I was walking daisy this morning, I realized how much I love fall in Chicago. The leaves change beautiful colors, the air is crisp, its apple pickin’ time and lets not forget my favorite drink at Starbucks is out..Pumpkin Spice Lattes!
And you know another great thing about fall? It’s time to start decorating for the holidays! We had two big hits in Madison this year that will surely inspire you & light a fire under your britches to start working on those holiday projects.
Blend fabrics has a new line out called Spooktacular. It was so popular that we’ve ordered a second round of bolts. We made this quilt with our Summer Tweets pattern. So simple that the top can be assembled from start to finish in a day! Summer Tweets was perfect for showing off the large scale prints. I just love that apothecary jar fabric.
This kit can be found in the Etsy shop for $45.00 including the pattern for free! No time left this year for Halloween, but we all know you can get it finished by next fall!..maybe;)
We can’t forget Christmas! We have another fun line from Blend fabrics called Hip Holiday.
It reminds me of Christmas Vacation when Clark puts that big tree on top of car! I couldn’t resist making this from our pattern called Fruitcakes. I spiced it up a bit though by adding a car & tree appliqué template.

So, my lack of blogging in the latter part of 2012 is embarrassing to say the least. I was busy though, I promise. I’d hate to think you guys thought I was just goofing off and being unproductive so I’ve gathered a few pics of some of the projects/fun things that we were up to.
Here we go… This is a commission quilt we made for a customer we met at Madison this year. Made for her granddaughter, Mimi. It’s a modified Sassafras. I tagged this one “I’m a Barbie girl”. It was so so very pink and girly!

All of those hexies I made became one of these…Is this the cutest place mat or what. Still workin’ on my 2nd one! This was a sample for when we were asked to vend at a local Modern Quilt Guild. We did a demo on hand and machine hexies.
We made a commissioned breast cancer throw for someone’s Christmas gift.
Started a spool quilt with Elsie’s Girl, Shelley, which we work on weekly. This is my progress so far…
I had some life changing decisions thrown…definition(Pushed or forced violently and suddenly into a particular state.) upon me. Which caused this…
And let’s just say this…you can’t hide from Karma peeps. At least I’m hoping anyway;) More on that subject at a later date.
Spent a total of 3 weeks over the last 2 months like this. Which probably was a result from all of the stress caused by the above…

Whew, 2 months of blogging done! Here’s to a great 2013! We made a lot of progress this year and we couldn’t have done it without all of your support. We made wonderful friends and met so many people thru social media and our experiences at the quilt shows and local guilds. Thank you everyone! We are looking forward to another exciting year!
You didn’t think I went there just to sell my fabric goodies did you? Of course I had to make my way through all of the great booths this year. There were several modern ones this time to keep me occupied! I blew my budget!

Check out this adorable pattern from Atkinson Designs. Make your own fabric glitter houses for Christmas! I also picked up my favorite presser foot, a clear open-toed foot. Mine is missing and I’m pretty sure that my son has sucked it up in the vacuum. I guess if you ask a teen to clean, you’d better have the floor picked up first! I also got these Swatch Buddies. A reusable fabric swatch fan kit for when you’re out looking for fabrics for that special quilt and you don’t want to carry around all those fat quarters!

Paige and I spent last Thursday evening vending at a local guild in Algonquin, IL. We did a little intro about what our shop was about, demonstrated how to use the Easy Dresden tool by Darlene Zimmerman, and gave a trunk show with all of the quilts we have made in the past year. We had a great time and we’d like to thank all of the ladies who welcomed us into their guild!
Since we are so Dresden happy, a demo on the Easy Dresden tool was just that, easy! I’d like to also share with you the steps to make one and also provide a refresher just in case some of the ladies from the meeting visit the blog.
This is the Easy Dresden, which can be found at your local quilt shop.
First, you’re going to want to determine what size you want your Dresden to be and cut a strip of fabric to that width. For example, if you’d like a 5″ Dresden, cut a 5″ wide strip of fabric. The Dresden I’m working with today is 8″, so I cut an 8 inch strip of fabric.
Start cutting your wedges from the strip by alternating the tool. This will cut down on any waste from your fabric.
Take your cut wedge and fold it lengthwise, right sides together and sew using a 1/4″ seam allowance, begin sewing at the widest end.
Chain piece all your wedges.
Clip your corner, being careful not to cut too close to your seam.
Turn the wedge right side out. Use the turning tool provided to turn out your point. Don’t push too hard. You don’t want to push your stitches through.
Press the wedge flat, making sure the seam is pressed open. This helps remove some of the bulk.
Sew the wedges, right sides together to begin making your plate. Always start from the widest part and work your way down. A tip to hide all of the loose threads, is to start 1/4″ down, reverse your way back up to the beginning, and continue to sew down the side of the wedge.
Press in one direction, careful not to stretch your plate.
I find it best to sew the Dresden together in sections. For example, our Dresden has 20 wedges. I sew 10 each together to make 2 halves and then sew the 2 halves together to make a Dresden.
Here are some examples of Dresdens that we have made using this Easy Dresden tool and this technique. This is our new Christmas Dresden Table Runner made from our SewMod pattern called North Garden. It’s made with 8″ wedges. This kit is now available in the Etsy shop. Just in time to get started on some of those Christmas Projects. We used the new Tinsel line by Maude Asbury for Blend fabrics and the kit comes with the free pattern!
The corner Dresdens on the Cannon Beach pattern…
I used a 2-1/2″ wide blade for the “grass” wedges on my Wonky Wildflowers wall hanging.
And instead of using the template provided for the this quilt, I made it easier by using the Easy Dresden tool. Neither the Wonky Wildflowers or this quilt required a pointed blade. The “grass” was sewn into the seam and the “tree” blades edges were turned under using hand applique.

A stack of the Amber Heirloom with a special touch of the Blend Calypso Stripe and Spindle. I really like these two mixed in here. Seems to brighten it a bit. And you can’t go wrong with a good stripe!
