Our first day was a success! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello. It was nice to see some familiar faces from last year and make some new friends too.
I posted a video from the booth yesterday. If you get a chance, check it out.
Here’s some great pics from today…
Our favorite design, Cannon Beach, makes another debut this year but has a more modern tone. As we like to call it…Tradi-Mod (traditional/modern). A very traditional Dresden using the 9 degree ruler for a large eye-catching center paired with modern fabrics by Windham & Lotta Jansdotter called Glimma. We used an Art Gallery grey dot as the background.
Don’t let the Dresden fool you into thinking this is a difficult pattern. It’s my second go at this one and I’m always amazed at how easy it is to make and get such a striking finished quilt out of. I really love how this one turned out!
Sassy Strollers is always a hit at the shows. I wish I’d had more time to remake it and kit it up too. Maybe next time…
Lots of little items too that can be made up for Secret Santa or gifts for teachers and co-workers. Little Wallets and needlecases.
It’s not a fun trip without a little something special thrown in…
This was parked outside on our way out for the day..lol.
Now off to relax with a little Mexican food and a couple of margaritas!
Here’s a little video we put together of our booth at the Madison Quilt Expo! Make sure to come by and say hello while at the Expo.
It’s summer and I bet y’all are out having fun and soaking up the sun, right? Unless your spending a couple of weeks in OKC like I am and it’s too dang hot to go outside! So I’m using my time wisely and preparing for our big show this September in Madison, WI. The Quilt Expo is only about a month and a half way and I should be grateful for the heat keeping me pent up inside because I have tons to do! I brought along all the makings for a quilt we will be kitting called ‘Rosalie’ made from all the new Art Gallery fabrics we recently received. My mom and I spent a few days making this and I gotta say…LOVE IT!
I’ll post the others as I get them finished. My next project is a Christmas quilt. Christmas in July. Maybe that will cool me down.
My mom always works on embroidery when she’s sittin’ around watching TV in the evenings. She’s made some really pretty tea towels lately.
And I just had to show ya the wool table mat on her kitchen table.
Keep cool y’all and check back for more new quilts!
This week, Shelley and I went to our local quilt shop, A Touch Of Amish, for a preview of a future club they’ll be having featuring Edyta Sitar from Laundry Basket Quilts. We both love her work so we were pretty excited to go! She has designed lots of patterns using different techniques and even has her own Batik fabric lines.
A Touch Of Amish will be having a monthly demo on several of her patterns featuring the different techniques she uses. Edyta does a lot of appliqué work and now she has come out with the pieces already pre-cut with a laser for you. It even has the Steam-a-Seam on the back for fusible appliqué. A bit expensive but if you want to do machine appliqué and don’t have the time for the intricate cutting, then these would be perfect for you!
If you’ve been following our blogs, or Flickr sites, you’ve probably noticed that Shelley and I have been working almost weekly on Edyta’s Spool Quilt pattern. We’re having a lot of fun with this. Almost done too! We only have the border to cut and appliqué. I can’t wait to finish and have them quilted.
We recently had the opportunity to see her in person at our local guild. She is an amazing woman to say the least! She is so interesting and creative. And I have to tell ya…I think I can be a bit ADD listening to speakers. I tend to wander mentally. Let’s keep that between us, ok? But anyway, I don’t think for one second I wandered. I was fascinated actually. I’m pretty sure I had chills at one point. If you ever get the chance to see her speak, GO!! You won’t regret it.
One pattern I’d like to work on next is the Dancing Umbrellas quilt. Maybe a little polka dots or little chevrons in it to brighten up the umbrellas. I want to make them colorful.
Unfortunately, I don’t have time to take on the amazing opportunity A Touch Of Amish is offering but do check out Shelley’s blog, Elsie’s Girl for all her progress. I’m sure it will be fabulous! I’m so jealous Shelley!
Well…Shelley and I are taking a border challenge class together at one of our local quilt shops, Acorn Quilts.. All we needed to start was to bring a center block of our choice. Of course being the over achievers we are, it had to be something fabulous! I chose the Which Witch’s Boot that I had been embroidering for Paige. I’m almost finished with the center. I’ve been stuck on the circle stitch, actually just dreading doing that stitch, so final decision…I’m not doing that stitch!
I’m going to add little yellow wool circles to it instead, giving it even more dimension. Since I’m almost finished, I’m going to hold off showing the finished piece till next time.
The quilt hanging in the shop was truly a work of art with attention to detail. And I loved the blue border on it.
The idea of the class is to start with a center and show up each month for the next border idea, 5 total. Our first class was yesterday evening. After everyone showed off their center, a color was chosen from a crayon box at random and a page number from a quilt block book. Our first border idea must incorporate the color Sepia, (a shade of brown) and flying geese.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a tiny piece of brown or even just one flying geese as long as you can show that was added to the border in some way.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of flying geese and Halloween is Candy Corn! Pretty excited about that! I hope I can get that to work out.
Next month when we meet there will be a new set of colors/tasks to work with. Each time the fun changes, and so does the inspiration. For example, we asked what was the inspiration for the blue triangle border on the sample quilt and she replied that she had chosen a “My Little Pony” from a basket of “items” and the pony had pointed ears shaped like triangles.
The inspiration is endless!!
Back from Thanksgiving and now the countdown is on for Christmas. I hope everyone had a great holiday. I spent time in OKC catching up with friends and family & now it’s time to get back to work and wrap up the year.
Paige and I spent some time this weekend picking out new fabric lines and hatching some ideas for the new year. Lots of Art Gallery prints and restocking the ever popular Oval Elements was on our list.
We ordered this cute line from Lecien Fabrics, designed by Natalie Lymer from Cinderberries due out in February.
Here’s a few shots I pulled from the Cinderberries blog. Head over and check her out if you haven’t already. She’s sure to be on your favorites list after you’ve seen all her cuteness!
Paige and I had so much fun last December working on our trees from the Material Obsession book called The Seasons found here that we decided to make it an annual thing. Its nice to do something just for fun that’s kinda un-work related. So now that the years work is winding down and orders are filled, were tackling our next fun project.
I don’t want to give too much away before our fun reveal but I’ll give you a sneak peek:)
We’re making something from this fabulous new book called Hexa go-go.
Yes my Hexie love is contagious! What did I work on while on vacation…hexagons! I even had my mom cranking them out on Thanksgiving. And now it’s Paige’s turn to become a hexie addict:)
These are some of the 3/4″ hexies we’ve been working on for this project.
My inspiration word is rendezvous and these are my fabric choices.
And that’s the only peek you get so far! If you don’t have the book and you’re a hexie lover like me, get a copy. Lots of projects to keep you busy. If you’ve never made a hexagon and want to learn, we have a tutorial found here. I just know that you’ll have Hexie love too!
Last Saturday Paige and I made the trip to the Long Arm Quilters guild meeting in Wheaton to see Jacquie from TallGrass Prairie Studio.
What an inspiration she was. She had started sewing when she was young but only began her quilting journey 5 years ago! Since then she has become a national speaker, writer of a highly successful blog and on her 2nd book!
Her work is very modern and “free”. No rules apply here!
Don’t throw away those extra blocks! Jacquie made several quilts using her orphan blocks and even used some to piece backings. Her backings were just as interesting as her quilt tops!
She does a lot of the quilting herself. Not worrying about being perfect. Using even her decorative stitches on her machine. This is probably the most inspiring thing I took away from the show. Freeing my mind up from having perfect quilting lines. Just going for it. I get stuck and frustrated when I think my quilting should be perfect. It’s my flaw. I left there thinking…I can do that! And trust me. I never think that when it comes to the quilting aspect of the process.
This quilt was my fave! Mod TV.
I was so excited to see her. I think I took a pic of every quilt!
Thank you Jacquie! Paige and I had a great time. You are a wonderful inspiration!
The featured vendor at the Sew Many Stars Quilt Show last weekend was local quilter Lynn Schmitt Cibulka. Her company, A Different Box Of Crayons adds a unique and exciting twist on the world of quilting. Having interior design in her background, Lynn has found her niche. She uses mixed media to keep her projects interesting, including wool, ribbon, cotton, silks & home decor fabrics.
I snapped some shots of her booth including her latest Halloween design.
Is this quilt and runner beautiful, or what?! She was drawing names for the runner. I bet someone walked away last weekend a very happy lady. I was hoping it was going to be though! I did manage to buy a needle case kit. I’m excited to get started on that.
This pillow was gorgeous too!
Can you tell I loved her booth?! She’s been one busy bee.
We’d like to thank the Country Quilters of McHenry for having us this past weekend. We had a successful show and everyone from the guild was truly helpful in making that happen. The quilts were beautifully displayed in the church. There’s nothing quite like seeing all of them in such a peaceful setting.
Here are a couple of the quilts that caught our eye..
