If you haven’t noticed by now, my recent projects and Handmade holiday’s have been made using scraps or fabrics from our stash. I didn’t plan it that way. It just must be the mood I’m in. I know everyone out there has a stash they’d like to bust through. Sometimes you just need a little inspiration, right?
Well, Paige was off work for the week of Thanksgiving and we accomplished sooo much! We worked almost everyday from morning till night trying to finish up some Christmas projects, client projects and doing SewMod planning. We busted, dented her stash! We worked on 4 quilts using fabrics she had collected over the years and I gotta say, I’m a little jealous of her stash. A closet full of fresh, modern fabrics. Like I’ve said before, she has a great eye for color and matching fabrics and it shows in these quilts.
These quilts are easy to assemble using mostly 3-1/2 ” to 4-1/2″ strips pieced together to make a 12-1/2″ block. Alternating the directions of the blocks adds interest. These quilts can be made any size by adding as many blocks as you have fabric for or adding borders. They can be quilted or put some Minky on the back, turn it inside out and tie it off with embroidery floss for a quick gift. We even used the leftovers for the backing.
We named this one, Gypsy Road, and it is backed with a chocolate Minky and tied off. No quilting or binding!
Candy Jar is a quilt for sale now in the Etsy shop. It’s made with a lot of Amy Butler fabric. Paige quilted this one on her longarm and the binding is hand stitched to the back. Very girly!
Urban Garden’s backing and batting was cut the same size as the top, sewed around the edges and turned inside out. It was stitched around the edges and through all the intersecting seams using the decorative wave stitch on your machine.
Lemon Grass turned out so fresh. I wasn’t sure about it at first when we started since the greens and yellows were so similar, but it’s one of my favorites now. Paige also longarm quilted this one and it has hand stitched binding.
I loved how easy these were to piece and the different ways to finish them off. So, start pulling out all those coordinating fabrics and get busy! There’s still time!
Paige and I were commissioned to do a Christmas gift for Kylee, the 8 year old daughter of Paige’s friend. Her mom wanted a quilt for Kylee that she could grow with and have as a keepsake when she got older. Something girly, with peace signs.
We used a Moda Bake Shop recipe found here called I’m Blushing by Natalia Bonner. Check out Natalia’s blog if you haven’t been by. She does awesome quilting and some pretty cute patterns too! Lot’s to drool over:)
Since Kylee wanted peace signs added to the quilt, we changed the pattern up a bit by replacing the circle flowers with giant daisies. We added peace fabric to the centers. Paige quilted in an all-over playful loop with some special attention around the daisies.
We added all the leftover fabric to the back. The backing turned out just as cute as the top!
Merry Christmas Kylee! We hope you love your new quilt!
A quilt I worked on during our SewMod sewing day was this quilt called Taza Baby. I cut all my Taza scraps into 4″ squares and sewed them together. The Kona Ash gray arrived in the store last week and was the perfect addition to calm this quilt and allow your eyes to rest.
Get your scraps out and use them, play with them. This quilt was on my design wall for a about a week before I finally realized it needed the gray. I knew it was missing something. I’m glad I didn’t give up. It turned out great! Paige did an all-over playful loop with the quilting. It doesn’t need anything more than that and this quilting can easily be done on your machine as well.
I even used the rest of the scraps on the backing.
Now, all baby has to do is pick which side she likes best!
Let’s make this week SewMod Baby week! Babies need Christmas presents too and what better gift than the softness of a Minky blankie.
We’ve made 3 new blankies for the Etsy Shop using the pattern on our tutorials page. These make up in about a hour or two and I’m sure everyone out there has a charm pack that’s waiting patiently in your stash for it’s turn to be made into something! If not, or your running out of time, these are available in the shop starting today.
Pure Baby, 36″ x 40″. Using a Pure charm pack by Sweetwater. A calming baby boy’s blankie that you’ll wanna snuggle your bitty one in!
Bliss Baby, 36″ x 36″. Made using Moda’s Bliss charm pack by Bonnie & Camille.
And Hoo Baby, 35″ x 35″, made in pink but we also can make this in the blue too.
We have other ideas for baby week, including another quilt. So hang with us this week for some ideas to whip up for the little babe’s on your gift list!
I still am unable to sew or do much handwork, so I thought I’d share some pics from fall and Halloween projects this week.
I love Fall and Halloween for many reasons..
Chill in the air, listening to the leaves dance outside and all the changing colors we are so lucky to see up here. This pic is the pond in our backyard. I was lucky enough to find the perfect day for the reflection of the trees. I wasn’t the only one out there taking pics that day. It was beautiful!
I decorate my front porch every year with this cute scarecrow I made after I first moved here and our local nursery grows their own mums. When I drive by and see the baby mums growing, that’s the 1st sign fall’s on it’s way. I made that cute wall hanging too. It’s a perfect fit!
I take down all of my normal decor in the kitchen and replace it with fun fall things like pumpkins, fall vines and wool mats.
And here’s the 2 wool table mats my mom made me…love these!
And last is the table topper I made for my kitchen table.
Try to take a walk today and enjoy the fall weather. It won’t be around for long!
Only a couple more pics from the booth to go.
Another one of our good friends took on the sample of Madeline.
She did a great job of picking the fabrics out for this to be oh, so girly. But, I already knew she would. She has a great eye for those things. The background is Art gallery’s Oval Elements in Petal Pink. The dress is out of the Taza fabric line.
The quilt can be made into a wall hanging or framed without it’s border. I think it’s adorable framed! It reminds me of pink bubblegum.
We found the pattern for these awesome needle cases over at SewPrimKhris’s blog and our friend Kelly whipped them up for us. They came out sooo cute. Just some scraps, felt, Velcro and a button. Great gifts for all your sewing friends. Each segment in the needle case could even be labeled for each needle size. I’m always getting mine mixed up.
Last is the Hoo Blankie. It has a Minkie backing for the cuddly, snuggle factor and a yard of fabric for the front. Easy, breezy blankie and it comes with a free pattern.
I completed this quilt right before my accident and our friend, Andrea, did the binding on it. Actually she did all our bindings. A huge help!
I used the Heirloom line for this quilt. The “grout” lines are Art Gallery’s Oval Elements in Eggplant. The pattern comes from Heather Peterson’s book Living Large 2. I’m not going to say this was the easiest quilt. Those grout lines took some time and I have a couple of mistakes but I gotta say it’s striking and I love looking at it. Even with my mistakes:)
Next is Swoon.
We didn’t want to make the entire quilt just yet, so Paige took one of the blocks and made up a sample. She used Anthology’s Bonjour line.
These are the other Bonjour fat quarters to complete the quilt… greens and purples. It’s gonna look awesome!
It would also look good and so modern in Kaffe fat quarters too. Two totally different looks.
As promised, this week I am going to show you some of the projects that we had on display in our booth at the quilt show. Better late than never, right? These are things that friends helped me get together while my arm was broken and I didn’t get a chance to blog about. Well, my arm is feeling much better and I can type with both hands now. Physical Therapy made it feel so much better. So, back to blogging. I have no excuses anymore!
My mom made up sets of handmade crochet flowers for us to sell. A set of 3 in approximate sizes 2.5″, 2″ & 1″. She made 8 different sets. The variegated purple is my fave!
She also made individual ones for us to use in kits. This is the sweetest Little Wallet kit. It only requires 2 fat quarters. And who wouldn’t want to be original and have a cute crochet flower instead of a button! These wallets whipped up really fast. I didn’t want to stop making them. Great stocking stuffer, don’t ya think?
And then we kitted the slippers with flowers also.
Lots of ideas for these cute flowers…hair clips and headbands for girls, scrapbooking, quilts. We even attached a tiny one to the cute appliqued owl for the Hootie & Friends quilt kit.
Each kit comes tied with a crochet flower…so cute!
Thanks Mom!
I just had to share these 4 new patterns we have in the shop, found here. It’s a seasonal series from Shabby Fabrics.
Winter…. Cute rick rack holly garland, embellished Christmas tree with presents, and a picket fence.
Spring… 3-D pinwheels in the sky, yo-yo flowers, bright and cheery!
Summer…Stars coming from the chimney, a cute scallop border, a flag and a kite in the sky. A patriotic home.
Fall…Giant sunflower, leaves falling, smoke in the chimney, pumkins on the porch, and a crow on the fence. Can you feel the chill in the air?
Of course these arrived just after I broke my arm, so naturally it’s all I think about making. These would fit perfectly on my porch. Definitely on my to-do’s!
Speaking of my arm, I go in Tuesday to see if my cast comes off. Keep your fingers crossed!
This quilt!
We used the Riley Blake, Hoo’s In The Forest, fabric to make this super easy baby quilt. A charm pack, a few yards of fabric, throw in some appliqued cuteness, & a couple hours of sewing and you’ve got an adorable keepsake!
I appliqued strawberries in one corner and a sweet little owl in the other.
Paige designed SewMod labels for all our handmade items. The are just printed on this fabric paper we found at the craft store.
I used pinking shears to trim the edges and sewed it right into the binding.
This is a really inexpensive and easy quilt. The kit is available for $29 and that includes the backing and binding. It’s available in 3 colorways, yellow, blue, and pink. This quilt is going to be part of our booth at the show but also will be available in our new store coming soon on Etsy …
This shop will be dedicated to handmade baby items, fabric and patterns. We’re pretty excited about launching this as part of SewMod! We have sooo many things going on, my head is spinning!!
